I teach in the style of Ashtanga Vinyasa.
This is a series of postures that is designed to keep you moving through a continuous flow, while engaging with the breath to aid the movement. This allows us to find ways to explore what our bodies can do physically, using inner and outer strength whilst moving through postures to find a release, as well as offering us patience and acceptance within, for ourselves and for our daily lives.
You needn’t have practiced yoga before. I teach all levels and regardless of which class you choose to join, variations and modifications are offered throughout. The option is also available for you to use any props necessary to guide you deeper into the stretch or to help with balance. Using props is not cheating, it’s progressing.
It surprises many people new to yoga how it’s not just sitting breathing and moving in slow motion. It can be strong, challenging; mentally and physically; and a full body workout. I often hear, ‘yoga is too slow for me’… ‘I need a proper work out’, from people who have never practiced. Don’t be fooled, Yoga is NOT to be underestimated.
That said, it isn’t something to rush through. It can take some time to find the flow. Especially with the many instructions of where and how to place the body on the mat whilst engaging with the breath. There’s always progression to be made, regardless of what level you’re at. Don’t be put off by the frustration of not getting it straight away. Give yourself the time to try a few classes to figure out the rhythm and style.
Allow for some patience and soon enough the magic will come.
